Topic: Principles of Design, Elements of Design

From the lecture, Ms. Maria brief us about the elements of design and the principles of design.

Lecture outcome :

Element of Design : Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Space, Value

Principles of Design : Balance, Pattern, Contrast, Emphasis, Proportion, Harmony, Rhythm

The principle of design that I want to introduce is Rhythm.

Rhythm creates a sense of movement in design. It is achieved when the lines, shapes, colors, textures, or patterns in clothing and accessories are arranged to lead the viewer's eye easily from one part of the garment to another.

Here are the examples of rhythm shows in the garment :

1. GRADATION

Designer: Stephan Caras

GRADATION refers to a design pattern that gradually increases or decreases in size, shape or color. As we can see, this dress shows the gradient of purple colour. The colour change from light to dark across the dress.

2. REPETATION

Designer: Viktor & Rolf

REPETATION is when a specific pattern, line, shape, color or texture repeated in a garment. There are many bows which is repeated from the shoulder to the edge of this garment. The bow's size also change from big to small which also shows gradation.

 3. RADATION

Designer : Gareth Pugh

RADATION is created when a pattern has a center starting point. As we can see, the line flow out from a single point on the garment.
