Introduction to Fashion Design
Lecture 3: Generating ideas
---------------------------------------------------------------
Topic: Fashion moodboard, Fashion Illustration

In this assignment, Ms. Maria wanted us to draw our own figure drawing for 10 fashion illustrations. Our design illustration should according to the moodboard. Ms. Maria also showed us the ways to create a moodboard by using Canva. Before creating a moodboard, we have to brainstorm our theme and some keywords.

So, here is my theme and keywords:

And this is my moodboard:
When I started my design, I realised that those pictures in the moodboard are not the darkest night, they are the brightest night. The stars, moon, fireworks, aurora, and fireflies brighten the night. With them, we will not afraid of the dark and they look beautiful too. So I decided to change my theme to 'The Brightest Night'.

Below is my new theme and moodboard:

Here are my sketches:

I showed my sketches to Ms. Maria and she wanted me to try colour one to see the result.
So, I coloured the first one:

Feedback by lecturer:

Ms. Maria said she doesn't see the connection with the moodboard and this looks bright and more like a costume. So, she wanted me to add some sparks to the garment since my moodboard has a lot of sparks. Besides that, Ms. Maria also shared with me the skills to colour sparkly dress. And also, she suggested me to change the skirt to a ruffle/pleated skirt since those pictures (aurora/fireflies) in my moodboard are movement.

So, I tried to practice colour the sparkly effect on the skirt and here is the result. Ms. Maria said it looks better. Therefore, I decide to change some of the sketches.

Here are my new sketches:

Final Result:

Visual Research 1:
Design I:
Left: I draw a long mermaid dress because I think the long skirt swirled can show more flowing. I color the dress with gradient color and sparkly effect.

Right:
I also draw a mermaid skirt and asymmetrical wings which show freedom. At the bottom of the top and skirt, I added some white pearls since they have luster surfaces.

Visual Research:
Design II:
Left: The arrangement of the moons cross the top which is the phases of the moon.
While the flowing pattern on the garment is inspired by the fireflies picture. The lace is used for decorating because it creates flowing.

Right: This garment design is inspired by the second picture. As we can see the moon under clouds but we still can see the moonlight.

Visual Research:
Design III:
Left: I draw a draped skirt for this garment because it can create pleats. I also colour it according to the aurora.

Right: I used some line pattern that looks similar like aurora flow to create repetition.

Visual Research:
Design IV:
Both of the two designs are inspired by those firework images.
The firework patterns and dark cloth colour showed contrast.

Visual Research:
Design V:
The decorations on the dresses are a combination of those pictures.
I used feathers and pearl chains to create this decorate.

Reflection:
I enjoy drawing fashion illustrations since it was interesting. I think I should understand my design theme clearly and figure out the collection styles before draw the fashion illustrations. I think I can do more visual research to improve my design collections. Besides that, I choose marker color for this collection as my marker color is better than watercolor. But I will try to use watercolor for my next collection.
