Exercise 02: Design Principles
-Week 3&4-
(7.9.2021&14.9.2021)
Design Principles
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topic: Design Principle- Balance, Emphasis, Repetition, Movement
From the recorded lecture, Ms. Jinchi showed us some design principles. They are Balance, Emphasis, Repetition and Movement.
Lecture Outcome :
BALANCE is the distribution of visual weight in a work of design. In symmetrical balance, the elements are equal 'weight' or arrangement; in asymmetrical balance, the elements are unequal visual weight but look balance. ![]() |

EMPHASIS is used to create dominance and focus in a design.

RULE OF THIRDS is a " rule of thumb" for composing visual images, such as design, painting and photographs. The guidelines make the image divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and those important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
REPETITION works with pattern and rhythm to make the design seem active. It can increase visual excitement in a design and avoid monotony.

MOVEMENT design leads the eye in, around and through a composition. A work of design with movement seems to move.

Here is my design process for Emphasis and Repetition:

Idea Exploration:
This is the picture that inspired me.
The butterflies can be focus on by a viewer because they are colored.
The woman's sketch and colored butterfly also show contrast.
My Sketch:
I draw a woman with sunflowers on her face.
Feedback by lecturer:
Ms. Jinchi suggested me to complete the hair sketches with some line and don't colour all black. And also, slightly correct the face portions as the forehead is a bit short.
So, this is the result I completed the hair.
Feedback by lecture:
Ms. Jinchi said it was better.
She also suggested me to add flower earrings to make it more interesting.
My Final Result:
REPETITION

Idea Exploration:
In this program, they went to the desert to complete their mission.
This is the scene that inspired me.

So, I decided to create some line patterns in the desert.
My Sketch:

Feedback by lecture:
Ms. Jinchi suggested me to add some colour in the design with analogous color.
And here is the result:
Feedback by lecture:
Ms. Jinchi recommended me to colour the lines of sunshine thicker and add some circles in the Sun.
My Final Result:
Reflection:
From this exercise, I feel good when creating the designs. I think I should improve myself to generate more ideas or create different designs during the brainstorm.
