Design Principles

Topic: Sense of place (The importance of observation)

Learning Outcome:
Observation is an action or process of closely observing and monitoring something or someone. Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details and being analytical of them. Good design and bad design is an activity for improving observation skills. For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Observing is an active act of obtaining information, through the senses of a subject matter in its natural setting.

SENSE OF PLACE refers to the emotive bonds and attachments people develop or experience in particular locations and environments.

From figure 1, we can see roads, cars, coconut trees and the beach. What I feel in this picture is enjoyable, summer, sea and vacation.

This picture showed Malaysia's landmark building, Petronas Twin Tower which is located in Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is a massive city of skyscrapers and historic architecture.

I think this design is quite interesting. This picture showed the scene when we are finding something in a box or drawer.

After watching the recorded lecture, we have to create a design about the sense of place. Before we start to create a design, we can draw a mindmap and think about where are you now or some places you had spent a lot of time previously.

Idea Exploration:
I created a mindmap before I start to design.
Figure 7: my mindmap
I choose the street to create my sense of place art since it created a lasting memory in my mind. When I was in high school, I usually take a bus or school bus to go home after school since my parents were busy working. When I'm on a bus, I like to watch the street view rather than play phone. I think I had spent a lot of time on the bus because sometimes is traffic jam. Therefore, I would like to draw what I see on the bus.

Sketch :
This is what I saw on a rapid bus.
Then I add a bell button and some hand-holders to make it looks more obvious that I'm on a rapid bus.

Feedback by lecture:
Ms. Jinchi wanted me to make outside (street view) lighter in color, so it will show the differences between I inside the bus and what I see outside the window. And also, add some human characters walking on the street or someone looking out from the shop's window. She also suggested me to add some birds to make the picture more lively.

I also decided to add some cars on the roads.

                  FINAL RESULT
So, this is my sense of place design. It shows my memory about I take a bus back home and what I see on the bus. Sometimes taking public transport will be interesting because we can see a lot of things then we are driving.

REFLECTION:
I think this project is interesting because it lets me recall my memory. And I really miss those memories. At first, I'm hesitant to choose hometown or street. Then I choose to draw streets because I enjoy myself alone on the bus. Although I have tried my best in this project, I still hope to improve my illustration skills.
